In June of 2012 I will be receiving my Master's Degree in the Art of Teaching with certifications in p-3, k-5 and Teacher of Students with Disabilities. As a part of a Social Justice course I am taking, I am to co-construct a Social Action project with my first grade students. This blog will allow you to follow my students and I on our journey to promoting social change in the Newark community.

Lesson 2: Photosynthesis
On Tuesday, March 13th my students and I continued to read "Oh Say Can You Seed" by Dr. Seuss, but this time we focused on how a plant makes its food, as opposed to the parts of a plant. I began my lesson with an informative message on photosynthesis using Message Time Plus and then went into the read aloud. We then utilized the smart board and did an interactive lesson around photosynthesis. Again, the students were really engaged and were asking some great questions! A lot of them continued to ask me if we could plant and grow our own foods. My favorite part of the day was when Isaiah mumbled "Plants are so lucky they can make their own food, they don't have to worry about ever being hungry." I found myself becoming extremely anxious and just wanted to yell out "We are going to do a unit on healthy foods and help Newark residents gain better access to healthy foods", but I knew I needed to keep quiet and let the students come up with that idea on their own. However, I felt that the preparation with plants was gearing their minds in that direction.
